Historian Martin Middlebrook studied not only the official and regimental histories, but also toured the battlefields and interviewed hundreds of survivors of both sides - British and German - to show in-depth the terrifying reality of one of the blackest days in the history of warfare . The first of July, in the year 1916, during the ' Great War ' , the so-called War to End All Wars . World War One . saw the first day of the Battle of the Somme . After an immense but useless bombardment, at 7:30 am on that day, the British Army went over the top and attacked the Greman trenches . On that day, the British suffered nearly 60,000 . sixty thousand . casualties of war . two men lost for every yard gained on the front. The dead on that one awful day exceeded the battle casualties of the Crimean, the Boer, and the Korean wars, all put together. With more than 50 times the daily losses at El Alameain and 15 times the British casualties on D-Day, that black day in July 1916 went down in history as the worst for the Brtitish Army, and, as Lloyd George recognized, as a watershed in the history of the First World War. The WWI army that attacked that day was made up of volunteers who had answered Kitchener's call. They had gone into action, confident of a decisive victory. But by sunset on that very first day on the Some, it had begun a struggle simply to be endured. Confidenc, and innocence, vanished. If WWI is the beginning of modern history, then that one day is the most crucial in that change. As one survivor wrote later " So ended the golden age ". " The First Day on the Somme - The Battle of the Somme , July 1 , 1916 " . by Martin Middlebrook . Hard cover book in original DJ, published by W.W.
