Small 4to. Mustard yellow cloth heavily laden with black and gold decorative and pictorial stamping to front board and spine. xl, 1021pp. All edges gilt. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Inner hinges a tad delicate but expertly and archivally strengthened. A lovely, bright later printing (31st edition, revised and enlarged) of this mammoth 1878 anthology, in striking ornate stamped binding -- surely the most popular and beloved poetry anthology of the late 19th century. This behemoth is usually found in distinctly inferior condition, prone to broken hinges given its size and heft -- making this exceptional condition copy far better than average. Title on spine and decorative title on front both in gilt. Embossed decoration to the boards. Leather is rubbed and worn at the corners and edges. Front hinge is delicate but intact, rear hinge is torn (end paper separated) but still holding at the underlying stitches. All edges of the text block are in gilt, a little worn but quite bright. Marbled end papers. A handful of loose pages at both the front and back, but all are accounted for, and the text block remains otherwise surprisingly sturdy, holding together nicely. Interior is clean and unmarked throughout. Overall quite a handsome and attractive collection of poetry from its time despite its wear. Nº de ref. de la librería N0139
