Descripción

Fifty Shakspere Songs(For High Voice), Edited by Charles Vincent, one volume from/in The Musicians Library, was published by Oliver Ditson Company, Boston, in 1907. This 9" X 12", 107-year-old, 157-page, believed-to-be First Edition offering is an ex-library, rebound copy in G+ condition. Some yellowing has occurred of the text's pages, and a previous owner's name and address is seen top-center on the blank page adjacent to Main Title Page as well as near top-outer corner of Main Title Page. There are a 2-3 little check marks next to random song titles as well as 2-3 marks and 2 little circles next to/around random page numbers on the front-of-the-book, alphabetized-by-title Index. Clear taping was necessary in 5-6 random spots to repair/shore up smallish tears on a few pages, and there is some fairly noticeable shelf wear at the four outer tips of cover boards and much less so in random spots along top and bottom edges of same. From pages ix/xi, "Few subjects could present greater attractions to a student of English song than a survey of the music composed to the verses written by the greatest of bards, William Shakspere, embracing as it does a period from the end of the sixteenth century to the present time. Almost every musician of ability since [his] time has set some of his verses; therefore a collection of this music, arranged in chronological order, must illustrate in a very practical manner the growth of style, the improvements in harmonic combinations, the freedom introduced into melodic passages, and the gradual development which has taken place in music generally, from the time when it was yet in its infancy to the present advanced state of the art. .[This] collection is divided into four parts: Part I, Songs mentioned by Shakspere in the Plays; Part II, Songs possibly sung in the Original Performances; Part III, Settings composed since Shakspere's time to the middle of the Nineteenth Century; and, Part IV, Recent Settings." For anyone interested in the music/songs originally found throughout Shakespeare's body of plays, and/or any songs later inspired by same[at least up to this offering's 1907 publication date], this is just simply a wonderful idea for a book. Also included are a Contents Page, the previously-mentioned, complete Index, and, of course, the scored music for all 50 songs, on their wonderfully, over-sized pages, which comprise, naturally, the bulk of this volume. Said songs display the talents of such varied composers as Robert Johnson, John Wilson, Henry Purcell, Thomas Augustine Arne, as well as Haydn, Rossini, Schubert, and Schumann. The book's lone Illustration is its Frontispiece, an approximately 5" X 7", black and white reproduction of William Shakespeare, from the Chandos portrait in the National Gallery, London, as etched by Leopold Flameng.
