The purpose of this thesis research was to determine if stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) amplification in multimode optical fibers would exhibit the same laser beam combining and clean-up properties exhibited by SBS oscillation, and to characterize the Brillouin amplification process in a multimode optical fiber. Beam combining in multimode fibers via SBS is being considered as a method of combining low power laser beams into a single beam having higher power and superior spatial coherence for applications such as electro-optic countermeasures. Experimental results demonstrate seeding a 9.5 m fiber significantly reduced the pump power required to initiate SBS. An amplified Stokes beam was observed with as little as 4 mW of pump power, and the maximum conversion efficiency was 44 , similar to conversion efficiencies reported for SBS oscillation. Polarization of the Stokes beam depended on seed beam polarization. The profile of the amplified Stokes beam depended on the coupling and polarization of the seed fiber; both LP01 and LP11 modes were observed from the 9.5 m fiber. However, the Stokes beam profile did not depend on spatial quality of the pump beam, exhibiting some of the clean-up properties associated with the SBS oscillation process. This thesis tested a CW fiber-based Raman amplifier implemented in a backward pumped geometry. To create a seed for the amplifier, a CW Nd: YAG laser operating at 1.064 m was used to pump a 50 m multimode graded index fiber using fiber Bragg gratings to create a Raman Fiber Laser (RFL) Oscillator with a Stokes beam at 1.116 . The Stokes beam was then used to seed two lengths, 5.3km and 2.5km, of 50 multimode graded index fiber. The fiber amplifier was pumped by a second CW Nd: YAG laser in the backward geometry. Spectral data taken for both fibers indicated that the backward geometry avoided the problem of Four Wave Mixing (FWM) present in the forward geometry for amplification. Gain and beam cleanup were observed in both lengths of fiber. An M2 of 6.7 0.2 was observed in the 5.3km fiber with 5 W of pumping. With 9 W of pump, a gain of 321.3 was observed, but severe attenuation due to the length of fiber prevented overall amplification of the seed with the available pump power. The 2.5km fiber produced an M2 of 3.9 0.5 with 5 W of pumping. With 10 W of pump, a gain of 241.8 and overall amplification of 153.1 was observed. Nº de ref. de la librería LIE9781249496793

This work examines the diffusion of rubidium through a small diameter tube alone and in the presence of noble gases. A fluid dynamics analysis is investigated to aid in choosing a method for transferring atomic rubidium vapor that is reliable and efficient. Solutions to the time dependant ordinary differential equation describing the experimental flow properties of the system reveal more precise outcomes than previously practiced routines. Resolved viscosities and Poiseuille flow theory velocity profile distributions are characterized for noble gas carriers of the rubidium vapor. Applying Reynolds Numbers to the flow experiments provides pressure differential boundaries that are employed in the successful rubidium vapor transfer process. Atomic spectroscopy is demonstrated through the use of a rubidium D1 resonate diode laser to record an absorption spectrum and extract alkali vapor densities that successfully propagated through a 12 cm long capillary tube with a 500 ?m inner diameter. A diode-pumped, ytterbium (Yb)-doped fiber laser system was designed and demonstrated to operate in continuous wave (cw), passively Q-switched and possibly passively mode locked operation. To our knowledge, this was the first fiber laser oscillator built at the Air Force Institute of Technology. A Cr4+: YAG (Chromium: Ytterbium Aluminum Garnett) crystal was used as a saturable absorber to generate Q-switched pulses. Attempts to mode lock the laserwere performed using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) and through nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). The best output power result was 5 Watt (W) while pumping at 8.3 W, yielding 60 efficiency and peak spectral outputs between 1087-1108 nm. Passive Q-switched pulses were generated using the Cr4+: YAGcrystal with a mean width of 2.9 s and repetition rates between 60-150 kHz. This corresponded to pulse energies of 7-24 and peak powers twice as high as the average power. Q-switched and possible mode locked pulses were generated using NPR. Q-switched pulse widths ranged between 1.8-2.8 with repetition rates between 29-72 kHz. Mode locked pulse widths were 10.5 ns with a repletion rate of 17.2 MHz. Brightness scaling lasers using stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers is explored. A multiple-channel amplifier approach is used to increase the total power of a laser system while avoiding a significant burden on a single channel. The work explores two approaches utilizing both SBS beam cleanup and SBS piston error conjugation. A unique beam combiner that takes advantage of the SBS beam cleanup properties of a long, gradient-index multimode fiber was designed and tested. The beam combiner was developed to combine multiple-channel laser beams simultaneously with high input and output coupling efficiency. The design for the SBS beam combiner is presented along with experimental demonstration of multiple-channel beam combining using the technique. Using SBS piston error conjugation to phase multiple-channel two-pass amplifiers is also explored. Various system configurations were investigated to demonstrate SBS beam phasing of both passive, unamplified channels and active channels containing fiber amplifiers. Beam phasing of the channels was successfully demonstrated with enough gain and power to merit consideration as a viable approach to multiple-channel laser power scaling.
