16mo, pp [4], 282, 3 wood-engraved plates on India paper by George Cruikshank, bound in neat contemporary half calf, spine with black label and flat raised bands gilt decorated, a little rubbed and with slight wear to extremities, frontispiece with short repaired tear, light minor spotting at front and a couple of ink spots to last page, but a very good copy, SECOND EDITION, THE FIRST WITH CRUIKSHANK'S ILLUSTRATIONS. The work was first published in 1825; authorship unknown, but very typical of the humourous novellas of the period, a genre into which Dickens would shortly fit. The small neat format is of the ladies pocket type, and indeed this copy bears the heraldic bookplate of Barbary Hylton Madge, mother of the poet Charles Madge who founded Mass Observation. Cohn 315.
