Sinopsis: This is a portrait of Jim McSheffrey, a complex yet humble man who pursued religious life as a Jesuit brother. Shy and awkward, Jim McSheffrey developed a passion for justice in his young adult years. While working in Ontario with the Children's Aid Society and a half-way house, and then with unemployed people in Newfoundland, he developed a profound respect for the poor. Never a mere do-gooder, Jim developed a lifelong and passionate commitment to social reformand community building in every region of Canada in which he lived and worked.
Many of those he encountered found themselves truly inspired by his presence, despite the difficulty of their own circumstances. "He was always trying to be helpful," is how many remember him. And yet Brother Jim would typically reply that it was only "God working through me."
When Jim died accidentally in 1999 at the age of 54, the church was so full for his memorial service that the crowd overflowed into the cold October night. This is a story about how one individual, following an unshakeable trust in a God of hope and justice, brought lasting light to those he worked with.
