Descripción (Cape Town: Africana Connoisseurs Press, 1963), 1963. Number 80 of an edition limited to 510 copies. 4to; original maroon rexine, lettered in gilt on upper cover; pp. 29. Somewhat foxed. Very good condition. 'The story of the struggle for the freedom of the press in South Africa is well known, but the broadsheet "Facts connected with the Stopping of the Press" is such a rare document that its re-publication is bound to arouse great interest. . A handbill was . posted outside the Printing Office announcing that "Facts connected with the stopping of the Press and the censorship of the Fiscal" would be published the following Monday morning at 8 a.m. Greig arranged his "Statement of Facts", and his comments on the "insult offered to an innocent and meritorious editor". This was all set in type, ready to be thrown off and published, but Somerset was determined it should not appear, so he sent the Fiscal on Sunday afternoon with a warrant to seal up the press. Greig showed him how this should be done, but as the type was not mentioned in the warrant, this was not sealed. The Fiscal departed, delighted that there would be no publication of the Facts next morning. Greig immediately added a copy of the warrant and an account of the day's events to the Facts already in type, and then the three printers worked all night pressing wetted paper with "mallet and planer" on to the inked type! Next morning the street in front of the office was thronged with people, and hundreds of copies of the Facts were thrown from the upper storey windows, to the deep mortification of Somerset and the Fiscal. When it was too late, the latter appeared again to seal up the type and the composing room!'. Nº de ref. de la librería 8380

Descripción (Cape Town: South African Library, 1978), 1978. South African Library Reprint Series 6. 4to; blue papered boards; pp. (viii) + (ii) + 154 + 4. Slight bump to top edge of lower board; boards a little sunned. Very good condition. Facsimile of the original edition, with a new introduction. "The South African commercial advertiser ran for eighteen numbers until 10 May 1824 when its policy of including law reports which incidentally showed the Governor, Lord Charles Somerset and his colonial administration in a bad light, led to a clash between Somerset and the proprietor. Before issue number 18 was published, the Fiscal at the Cape insisted on first approving the proof-sheets of the newspaper before allowing publication. Although the proofs were passed by him and number 18 was issued, a postscript was added to it by Greig, Fairbairn and Pringle which announced that they would no longer publish the newspaper while subject to such controls, and they would appeal to the British Government for a directive. When the publishers announced they were about to issue Facts connected with the stopping of the press and the censorship of the Fiscal, the Fiscal responded by serving them with a warrant to seal the printing press. Nevertheless, Greig still printed the Facts using standing type, since the type itself was not specifically mentioned in the warrant, only the press." - from the Introduction.
