256pp., including half title, plus seven lithographic plates (six of them color tinted plates) and numerous wood engravings in text. Contemporary pebbled cloth, spine reinforced with later tape. Boards a bit bowed, edges and corners worn. Contemporary Little Rock Book Binder and Seller Ticket on front pastedown. Leaf containing pages 79 and 80 as well as the plate immediately following detached but present. Some gnawing to top edge of textblock, not affecting text. Contemporary ownership inscription on titlepage. A good copy. Interesting early color Arkansas views. According to McGrath, five of the plates (lithographed by Hoen in Baltimore) were prepared with no fewer than three tinting stones in addition to the key stone. In this copy, six of the seven lithographic plates are tinted. The quite beautiful plates include: "Sugar Loaf Mountain of Searcy County," "Calico Rock on White River," "Sugar Loaf Mountain if Marion County," "Mammoth Spring of Fulton County," "Prominent Mass of Sandstone," "Rock House on Cave Creek, Newton County," and "Natural Dam Across Lee's Creek in Crawford County." Owen's survey was undertaken as part of the mid-19th-century push to discover and use all America's natural resources, thereby cutting down on the need for imports. McGRATH, pp.82, 135.
