[AFRICAN-AMERICAN AUTOBIOGRAPHY: SLAVE NARRATIVE]. [BALL, Charles]. FIFTY YEARS IN CHAINS, or The Life of An American Slave [by Charles Ball, prepared by Redwood S. Fisher]. Twelvemo, reddish-brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, 430 pages. An important slave narrative. Although Howes states: "One of the few personal narratives of Southern slaves that sounds veracious," the introduction to earlier editions makes it clear that it was written by Redwood S. Fisher, from stories told to him by Charles Ball, an American slave. Work (p.311) states: "Prepared by Fisher, from the verbal narrative of Ball." Owner's contemporary ink inscription on front flyleaf ("Mr. Andrew Kidd, Newburgh"). Cloth is soiled, spine and extremities of covers are quite worn and moderately chipped, with early, crude mend on hinge of rear cover, few signatures of text are slightly sprung; just a good copy, with the text clean and sound. Later (second?) printing of this edition [first published under this title in 1859; originally published in 1836, under the title Slavery in the United States. .; see Howes B65; see also Work p. 310].
