262pp. This is a copy of the scarce first printing in English - translated from the French edition of 1865 by A.G. Munro - which in turn had been translated from the Sogdian by Alfred Assollant. The Sogdian language was an Eastern Iranian language spoken in the Central Asian region of Sogdia, based around present day Samarkand. With over 100 delightful steel engravings [both full-page and in-text] by the celebrated French artist Yan D'Argent. Publisher's 40pp. catalogue at rear dated October 1874 (i.e. first issue). Some sun fading to the spine. else a near fine copy bound By Burn & Co. [small sticker on rear pastedown] in purple cloth, elaborately blocked in gilt and black, with beveled edges to the boards and all edges gilt. 8vo. N° de ref. de la librería
