Early marbled paper over boards, beautifully rebacked, gilt-stamped lettering in burgundy leather spine label in second compartment (5 raised bands); 8vo; pp. , 394. Boards very lightly rubbed, otherwise binding is fine. Half-title page trimmed a little short along bottom edge, with contemporary ownership signature at top edge; text block a bit age-toned, but otherwise clean and unmarked. A facsimile of Kames's bookplate is laid-in. An excellent copy. Uncommon. "Have you seen our Friend Harrys Essays? They are well wrote; and are an unusual instance of an obliging method of answering a Book. Philosophers must judge of the question; but the Clergy have already decided it, & say he is as bad as me. Nay some affirm him to be worse, as much as a treacherous friend is worse than an open Enemy" (Hume to Michael Ramsay, June 1751). Kames's first edition was so controversial that he attempted to tone it down for his second edition of 1758. A charge of heresy was brought against him before the Presbytery of Edinburgh, with further complaints against the printers and publishers, but the death of the chief prosecution witness, Rev. George Anderson, brought the hubbub to an abrupt conclusion in 1756. N° de ref. de la librería
