The siege of the Alcazar, a Nationalist strongpoint in Toledo, was a historic and momentous encounter of the Spanish Civil War. The Alcazar, used as a military academy , was besieged by Republican forces on July 21 and Nationalist forces brought relief to the besieged on September 27. During this action the 800 defenders were vastly outnumbered by the Republican force. Their weapons were restricted to light arms while the Republicans also used some artillery and armoured vehicles. There were also about 700 civilians in the Alcazar. Throughout the siege the Republicans attacked frequently, often coming close to success, but were always repelled. Relief of the Alcazar was a symbolic victory for the Nationalists early in the conflict. Soon after the relief the author visited Toledo to gather material for this book, which examines the history of Toledo and the Alcazar, the causes of the civil war and gives a day-to-day account of the siege as well as looking at the architecture and historic significance of the Alcazar. First published by Rich and Cowan in 1937, this copy a first edition, 317 pages including two appendices, illustrations include a frontis map of Spain, 39 b/w plates, mainly photos, with some art, plans and drawings, most plates have double images sometime including a sketch or plan, two fold-out plates show a plan of Toledo and a panoramic sketch of the Alcazar.
