Descripción Printed for G. G. and J. Robinson, London, 1794. Third edition. iv, xx, 564pp. With 12 copper-plate engravings illustrating tables settings of bills of fare for each month of the year. Contemporary calf boards, recently rebacked and reconered. Rubbing and some surface loss to boards. Occasional light browning, short tear to margin of Ff3 - just touching text, paper repairs to top margin of Gg5 - touching text of running title, bookplate of 'Harlan and Delia Walker' to verso of FFEP. In The English Art of Cookery Briggs presents singularly pragmatic methods for the production of foodstuffs. Drawing upon personal experience through his work at Temple Coffee House, with choice selections made from John Farley's The London Art of Cookery (1783), a vast selection of recipes are included with clear and concise instructions provided for the preparation of each. The variety of the dishes ranges from the rather mundane and every-day such as 'Green Peas Soup' (p.27) and 'Eggs poached' (p.289), to the more exotic and outlandish such as 'To dress a Turtle the West-India way' (p.52) and a technique 'To lift a Swan' (p.479). ESTC T91032. Size: 8vo. Nº de ref. de la librería AQ11667

Descripción Printed for G. J. and J. Robinson Pater-Noster Row. London First edition. 8vo, 1788. pp. iv, xx, 656. 12 engraved plates. Contemporary sheep newly rebacked, single pin-hole worm trace in the lower corner of the first 29 leaves, the same in the upper corner of the last 94 leaves, the final few leaves with a fine trace of worming in the fore-edge margin, occasional foxing, overall a very good copy, the worming quite unobtrusive. *With this ink inscription on the front paste-down - 'The Gift of Mrs. Wilkinson of Plas Grono to Mary Peters of Minera July Anno Domini 1804'. The donor was most likely the wife of JOHN WILKINSON (1728 - 1808), a pioneer of the modern, mechanized iron trade. He was born at Clifton, Cumbria, in 1728, educated at the Dissenting Academy of Caleb Rotherham at Kendal and worked with his father Isaac, in the family iron-works, from c.1748. He subsequently moved to the Midlands and established his own iron-works. In 1753 his father took a lease of the Bersham, Wrexham, furnace and with his wife and younger children took residence at Plas Grono, on the Erthig estate. John Wilkinson returned to the family enterprise and went to live in Wrexham. Using ironstone from Llwyn Einion and coal from Ponciau , the firm made all manner of iron goods. Isaac failed (c. 1761), and with John at the head of the new firm, New Bersham Co., became the leading manufacturer of ordnance for the Government [See National Library of Wales, Dictionary of Biography]. The recipient, Mary Peters, is not known, but Minera, near Mold, was the site of lead-mining activity - John Wilkinson was unsuccessful in his attempts to re-open the Minera lead-mines. ESTC gives four UK locations and 3 in the USA. Nº de ref. de la librería 58431
