CLIP - - Of the four Folio volumes, the most traditional in terms of he use of available evidence is Sir Alan Gardiner s The Egyptians. Gardiner spent most of his career as an independent studying Egyptian texts; he had not only an unrivalled of monumental and documentary matter, but a ability to translate both accurately and elegantly. His of translations in his book distinguishes his approach; it somewhat limits it, for he makes very little direct use of evidence derived from excavation. He believed that, while texts should not be used uncritically, it was through texts that one could come best to understand the minds of the ancient Egyptians. His book was written at the end of a long and distin- guished career, and it covers the history of Egypt from the start of the First Dynasty (about 3100 BC) until the conquest of Alexander the Great in 332 BC. However, in his brief discus- sions of Predynastic Egypt and the shadowy rst two dynasties which he places at the end of his main narrative, he gives more than a cursory nod at the achievements of archaeology in the elucidation of these remote periods. Gardiner s volume appeared in 1961, a year before the publi- cation of H. W. F. Saggs s The Greatness that was Babylon. Here again texts mostly in cuneiform on clay tablets - provide the bulk of the documentary evidence, most of them acquired through excavation. Although Babylon is named in the title, the work is essentially a history of Mesopotamia from prehistoric times down to the invasion of Cyrus, the Persian king, in the mid-sixth century BC. It is, however, much more than a simple political history of a complicated region; Professor Saggs reserves more than half his volume to a discussion of cultural aspects of the B-ablyonians and Assyrians, drawing richly on the written texts, and supported where necessary by archaeo- logical evidence. A second edition, published in 1988 (the text of which is that reprinted by Folio as The Babylonians), con- tains many revisions of ideas modi ed by discoveries made subsequent to the writing of the rst edition. In purely historical terms, the revelation of the twentieth century has been the Hittite Empire. Apart from a few shadowy mentions in the Old Testament, the I-littites were practically unknown until the late nineteenth century. Shadow gave way to substance when the decipherment of Egyptian texts revealed the power of the land of Khatti in the late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Dynasties. In O. R. Gurney s The Hittites the remarkable story of their discovery prefaces his main narrative concerning their history and culture. Through the excavation of Hittite cities in Anatolia, and through the decipherrnent of thousands of texts found in these excavations, the languages and way of life of this Indo-European people, living in an almost exclusively Semitic world, have been teased out by scholars. O. R. Gurney, an Assyriologist with specialised inter- ests in the Hittites, produced this synthesis of current know- ledge the rst of real importance in English in 1952, and he has kept it up to date through regular revisions. The rise and fall of the Hitt. Nº de ref. del artículo: 010609
