Elsie Margaret Stones AM, MBE (b. 1920) - Signed Original Mid 20th Century Watercolour. Study of Enkianthus Chinensis, inscribed with botanical name in pencil to the lower centre, signed in pen along the branch at the lower left. Presented in a washline mount and simple gold frame. With an old gallery label from The Heffer Gallery, Cambridge, on the reverse. Signed and inscribed. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration but generally the appearance is good. There are some areas of light wear to the gold frame.Elsie Margaret Stones (called Margaret) is one of the most distinguished botanical illustrators of the 20th Century. Born in Australia in 1920, she developed a love of drawing wild flowers at a young age, and her talent was noticed by the National Gallery of Victoria and the Georges Gallery, Melbourne, and she has her first solo exhibition in 1946. She continued to exhibit whilst also working on commissions for the likes of private collector John McDonnell, and studying botany. Her ambition was to work as a botanical illustrator at the prestigious Kew Gardens in London, and she worked as freelance artist there after arriving in London in 1951. The Colnaghi Gallery had also given her an exhibition and representation by this time, and her illustrations were soon being featured regularly in 'Curtisâ s Botanical Magazine', the journal affiliated with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. She was also commissioned to illustrate the book 'The Endemic Flora of Tasmania' by Milo John Reginald Talbot, 7th Baron Talbot de Malahide. In 1976, Stones was commissioned to create six watercolour drawings of Louisiana native flora to act as a lasting legacy of Louisiana State Universityâ s bicentennial celebration. The Louisiana drawings are exhibited regularly in the University library, and they have also been exhibited at venues across the United States, in Great Britain, and at the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne.
