The Ellen Terry Ladies' Reciter/Hawthorne's Tragic Reciter, one selection from The Arlington Wonder Library, was published by Hurst & Company, Publishers, New York, in, so far as I can make out, 1884. Not an ex-library copy, this two-books-in-one, 220-page(100 + 120), 4 3/4" X 7", presumed-to-be 130-year-old offering is in, despite its advanced age, G+ condition. There is with this book a stubborn firmness overall, physically speaking, although there is browning of end papers front and back as well as the pages of text. Some webbing is observed between the Title Page and the following page (featuring a brief biographical sketch of Miss Terry, esteemed 19th century actress), pages 96-97 of the Ladies' Reciter, and pages 94-95 of Hawthorne's Tragic Reciter (in all three instances, I clear-taped the length of the center seams to perhaps provide some stability/shoring up of same). The string-type method of central binding, so common for that day, is utilized. There is some light, random spotting along the top edge of the front, ORIGINAL cover board, and a bit more of same, extending a little farther down from top edge, of back, ORIGINAL board. For some reason, Reader, there are two, canceled U.S. postage stamps (a light green, 1c Ben Franklin and a dark blue, 5c Abraham Lincoln), right next to each other, attached to the upper left corner of the front paste down page. From front Title Page, "The Ellen Terry Ladies' Reciter [Contains] Choice Pieces, Elegant Verses, Sublime Speeches, Apt Selections, Splendid Lines, and Grand Recitations. A Proper Book to Put in the Hands of Schoolgirls, Sweethearts, Wives, and Daughters". Just some of the 56 selections included are Shakespeare's "The Fairy King", Tennyson's "The Old Mother's Story", Schiller's "The Maiden's Lament", "The Diver", and "Alpine Hunt", and Kitchner's "Dying Husband" and "One May Day". The second portion of this offering, Hawthorne's Tragic Reciter, ".[Contains] The Very Best Pieces Ever Written, Expressive of Love, Hate, Fear, Rage, Revenge, Jealousy, and the Other Most Melting, Stirring, and Startling Passions of the Human Heart"(from the Tragic Reciter's Title Page). Just a few of its 77 selections include Scott's "Young Lochinvar", Lowell's "The Relief of Lucknow", Bobby Newcomb's "Dorkin's Night", Charles Sumner's "The National Flag", Edward Everett's "The People Always Conquer", Bulwer's "There Is No Death", Milton's "Truth", and Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "War". Most certainly a lyrical slice of late 19th century Americana, courtesy of a bevy of writers and poets who have long since enjoyed their collective day in the sun, but should not be forgotten. Thank you!!. N° de ref. del artículo 007179
