This is the ORIGINAL First Edition 1882. Floral endpapers. (No half title - was there ever one? ) Two former owners' names/dates in ink on the top of the Title page. 156 pp. Contents are divided into 2 Parts - Part 1 has 13 Chapters with titles including = 'Life and Love'; 'Home and Love'; 'Home and Duty'; 'A Child's First duty'; 'The Teachings of Conscience- Truth'; 'Self-Respect'; etc. Part 2 has 18 Chapters with titles including = 'The Family of Mankind'; Social Duty'; 'Honest Work'; 'Our Debts to Society'; 'Our Debts to the Animals that Feed and clothe us .' ; 'Patriotism'; 'The Good that Conquers Evil'; etc. Every chapter is punctuated with extracts in verse that range from Shelley to Longfellow, and at the end of each chapter a brief question session for teachers/pupils which reinforces the argument/lesson in the chapter. Caroline Bray was a great friend and influence on George Eliot - " The accomplished Cara Bray, ‘always [George Eliot’s] most sympathetic friend’ (Haight, p. 144) , wrote a number of popular educational books ‘notable for their clearness and simplicity’ and ‘expressing the sweet nature to which George Eliot, among others, paid tribute in her letters and journals’ (DNB, Oxford DNB).". " In 1841 Mary Ann [not yet ‘Marian’] Evans (George Eliot) was introduced to Cara and Charles Bray, ‘who were to be her most intimate friends during the next thirteen years’, until her elopement with G. H. Lewes. ‘It is impossible to overestimate the importance of Mary Ann’s introduction to the Brays’ (Haight, pp. 36, 44). Apart from the value of their warm friendship, the years of discussion and enquiry with the sceptical Charles and the religious Cara had a crucial influence on Mary Ann’s own religious opinions. ." . A very scarce and quite important title. " This ‘excellent little book’ is one of her ‘most important’ (DNB). It would be hard to find a more attractive guide to popular Victorian morality.".; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. N° de ref. de la librería 109283
