"The world economy has been working in conditions of heavy strain and dramatic tension during the 70's. The decade started with the definite breakdown of the foundations of the Bretton Woods international payments system. It continued with a considerable rise in the prices of food primary products in particular. This inflationary impulse was reinforced and grew into one of the most marked periods of worldwide inflation ever seen in peace-time as a result of the rise in the oil-prices. Most countries suddenly experienced unforeseen-and unforeseeable-internal and external disequilibria. As a consequence, economic policies on the country and company level were changed towards restraining growth and economizing with resources. To the classical problems of a growing world population and a scarcity of basic resources were added a renewed interest in efficiency in the use of material resources and intensified efforts to rechannel financial resources from surplus to deficit units. The theme of the 30th IBSS-'Effective use of global capital resources'-was selected with these tendencies and the growing international interdependence in view. For a long time the economists used to talk about 'the money veil', implying that money, credit, and finance could be lifted out of economic analysis and that their main function was to obscure real development. This has proved a fallacy. Not least the past few years have illustrated dramatically the importance of the financial operations, of the banks and of other credit institutions in the economic development and in the effective use of global resources. The papers delivered at the 30th IBSS at Ronneby Brunn, Sweden, aim at illuminating some aspects of the contributions of the financial system towards an increased efficiency in the use of resources." {C. -J.
