First edition, second impression. Hardback in dustwrapper, bound in the original boards with printed titling to spine and front. 18 × 12cm, unpaginated. The Eastern Fells include the greatest single concentrated mass of high ground in Lakeland: a tremendous barrier running north and south, high and steep all along its length, rising to above 3000 feet on Helvellyn - the most-often climbed mountain in the Lake District. Popular resorts such as Ambleside and Grasmere lie in this sector of the fells, as does the beautiful Patterdale valley (the best base, in Wainwright's view, for exploring the area. A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells is a series of seven books by A. Wainwright, detailing the fells of the Lake District in northwest England. Written over a period of 13 years from 1952, they consist entirely of reproductions of Wainwright's manuscript, hand-produced in pen and ink with no typeset material. Condition: The book is in very good condition. The gilt titling to the front and spine has faded, the inner binding is very secure and the pages are clean. There are dry tape residue marks to front and rear endpapers. The dustwrapper has some heavier tape residue marks to front and back, some spotting to the spine, and has some few small tears to the edges but remains generally attractive. Overall, a very decent copy of an early edition of the first book in the series. PLEASE SEE THE COX AND BUDGE WEBSITE FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND TO SEE OUR FULL RANGE OF BOOKS.
