Descripción:

Octavo. Original linen-backed pale blue paper boards, printed paper label to spine, title to front board in black, blue endpapers. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine toned, board edges a little faded, two small glue remnants to front pastedown, contents lightly toned. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression, one of 500 copies. This copy inscribed by Elizabeth C. Yeats on the verso of the second blank: "Printed and published by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats in Dundrum County, Dublin, Ireland, in the the year 1923." The Cuala Press was born out of the Dun Emer Press, a private press established by Yeats's sisters which played an important part in the Celtic Revival. The poet acted as literary editor and subsidised its productions. Elizabeth Yeats took a short printing course and oversaw productions. "In 1902, when [Lily] Yeats and her sister, Elizabeth, were invited by Evelyn Gleeson (1855–1944), Gaelic leaguer and suffragist, to help set up a craft enterprise along the lines of Morris's utopian socialist ideals, they moved back to Dublin with their father. They took a cottage, Gurteen Dhas ('pretty little meadow'), in Churchtown, Dundrum, near the house, Dun Emer, in which Gleeson set up a printing press, carpet and needlework rooms, and other artistic ventures" (ODNB). "The Dun Emer Press was set up using a second-hand Albion handpress that it had acquired through advertising in local newspapers, and paper that had been manufactured at the County Dublin Saggart Mills. [the Press] showed how a specialist press, driven by a combination of the Gaelic League and the Arts and Crafts Movement, could work against the grain of imperial drives and directives, and produce small print runs of ideologically and aesthetically determined rather than economically driven texts. Ironically, in retracing the glories of the eighteenth century in its attention to detail and craft perfection, the press also provided imagery and an aesthetics that would be later grafted onto the new Irish republic and mass-produced in the twentieth century for the Irish diaspora around the world" (Ferguson, pp. 24-6). Following a reorganisation in 1904, with the Dun Emer Guild run by Gleeson and Dun Emer Industries under the direction of the Yeats sisters, in 1908 the groups separated, and Gleeson retained the Dun Emer name, while the Yeats sisters established Cuala Industries at nearby Churchtown, which ran the Cuala Press and an embroidery workshop. Valoración

Descripción Cuala Press, Churchtown Dundrum, 1915. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. The book number above relates to three volumes from the Yeats family: "Reveries over Childhood and Youth" from William Butler Yeats; "Plates to accompany Reveries over childhood and youth by W. B. Yeats" and "Early Memories; some chapters of autobiography" by John Butler Yeats [father of W.B.]. All three are from the stable of the legendary Cuala Press a private press, started by Elizabeth Yeats. There is vivid and strong evidence in all three books of how her time with William Morris in London influenced her use of paper, print, font and decoration. "Reveries" is marked (by hand) number 56 of 425 copies published in 1915. "Early Memories" published in 1923 ("the second year of the Irish Free State") is one of five hundred copies printed. It has a preface by W.B. Yeats. Both of these books have some uncut pages. All three of these beautiful small books have board covers and cloth spines. All three have general handling and shelving wear to the covers and the corners. The slim volume of plates contains all the plates to accompany William Butler's "Reveries". The inside front and back covers and frontis and back papers have general marking and age related markings. All three spines are marked and worn. Inside, the pages are thick, thrillingly energetic and beautifully printed. The print is bold and fresh. The plates have foxing to the bottom rims. the black background of the 'memory harbour' plate is torn but the plate itself is not damaged. Some pages have foxing and handling marks, but in major generality the pages are unblemished by age or hand. These books may be owned with complete satisfaction, joy and pleasure. fk.
