Descripción

Small 4to. One of 220 numbered copies (the entire edition). Designed and printed by Kim Merker. This copy is inscribed by the poet: "To Marie Louise: who taught me so much, with thanks, Phil Levine." The recipient is Marie Louise Koenig. In his essay ''The Shadow of the Big Madrone,'' Levine remembers an elderly German woman named Marie Louise. As he was building himself a dining room table in her backyard, she interrupted his work with the observation: ''I do not mean to pry, but I cannot help noticing that you sing when you do this work. I do not think . . . that when you work on your poetry you can sing. I think you actually prefer this kind of work. . . . I think we have this in common. Inside each of us is a peasant waiting to be allowed to live a simple, decent life, but the intellectual keeps the peasant working at all hours behind a desk.'' A near-fine copy (issued without dust jacket). N° de ref. de la librería 23072
