THE DOWN EASTERS American Deep-water Sailing Ships 1869 - 1929 Basil Lubbock Brown, Son & Ferguson Ltd., Glasgow. 1930 Second Edition 286pp Illustrated Hardback. This copy is bound in original blue skivertex covered boards with blind titling to the front and gilt titling to the spine. The stock is tight. There are some occasional fox marks and tanning with all plates and plans collated. This book is an attempt to give a history of these ships, which have long been known to seafarers under two names-The Down Easters, indicating their origin, and the Cape Horners, as showing their chief trading route, around Cape Horn. In order to round up this history of the last days of America's sailing marine, a chapter is added describing the many European-built square-riggers which ended their days under the Stars and Stripes. In the Appendix will be found a register giving the measurements and tonnage of all ships mentioned in the text. There also will be found the record of two of America's most famous clippers the Young America and the David Crockett, as well as a log of Mackay's last masterpiece, the Glory of the Seas. Although there are no stamps or library marks this copy may have come from a British Troopship bound for South East Asia as, laid in, are a number of 'ships Newspapers' one of which mentions the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. there is also a pamphlet which is a little guide to Rangoon published by Advanced Headquarters Allied Land Forces, South East Asia Command.
