'As news of Lombroso's theory spread, many Americans began writing about it . . . We can identify [key American elaborators of criminal anthropology] . . . by defining them as authors of book-length works that to some degree endorsed the concept of the criminal as a physically distinct, atavistic human being and that are frequently cited in both the primary and secondary literature on criminal anthropology. Applying this definition, I found that there were eight leading American criminal anthropologists who together produced nine works of this sort . . . These major American books on criminal anthropology addressed three overlapping audiences. Charles R. Henderson's Introduction to the Study of the Dependent, Defective and Delinquent Classes was designed as a textbook for college students and social welfare workers; Philip A. Parsons' Responsibility for Crime, originally a Columbia University dissertation, also seems to have been written for classroom use. Two of the studies (Eugene S. Talbot's erudite Degeneracy and G. Frank Lydston's massive Diseases of Society) were at least partially directed toward other professionals. The rest were written to inform - in some cases to alarm - the general public' (Nicole Hahn Rafter, Creating Born Criminals, University of Illinois Press, 1997, p. 116).
