Descripción:

Original manuscript. Square 8vo., contemporary blue calf gilt by Bumpus. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author, 'To John Gielgud from Ronald Mackenzie as a symbol of gratitude. May 25th 1932'. Gielgud has written beneath this: 'Musical Chairs. Arts and Criterion Theatres. Original manuscript given me by the author, killed in a motor accident in France 1932'. Loosely inserted is a portrait photograph of the author. Mackenzie sent Gielgud the script for the play with a letter, in which he reminded him that they had been to school together. Mackenzie was an overnight success with this play. widely praised and commercially successful. It was an important early role for Gielgud - described by Morley as 'the best contemporary role he had ever been offered'. Gielgud immediately took to the play and it was one of his great early successes. The critic James Agate wrote of it, 'I am now ready to burn my boats. Musical Chairs is, in my view, the best first play written by any English playwright during the last forty years'. Mostly a fair manuscript, but with some dozen revisions, mostly removing whole phrases, but in several cases bowdlerizing the text, possibly at the Lord Chamberlain's insistence. 'What a marvellous mistress you would make' becomes 'What a marvellous creature you are', and in another an extensive passage of explicit flirting 'What do you want me to do, sleep with you?' is replaced with something more anodyne. A list of actors, including of course himself, added to the list of characters. Some wear to the extremities, spine faded, back cover sunned. N° de ref. de la librería
