Descripción

The felon's own copy of his published defence: i- I[sic; for c; i.e., 100), 280p., hardbound in quarter calf with outer tips over 8x5 inch marbled boards, black spine label gilt, spine rulings gilt, all edges sprinkled roan. A sound copy with one serious and several cosmetic flaws. Most seriously, the top half of the title page appears to have been laid down on one of the original blanks; the bottom half is entirely missing; the line of excision done neatly. General condition is good; the hide was well-tanned and needs only leather dressing to be quite presentable despite a small gouge to rear panel, mild abrasion and loss of much of the original polished surface. Spine label is defective, a third having been lost, remainder legible. Rear hinge is cracked but holding well. Front pastedown bears a small offset toned area and an old ownership or bookseller's note in pencil, which reads in part: "Cochrane Johnstone's copy 11 years before the Stock Exchange hoax when he fled the country." Indeed the defendant has signed the item three times in old sepia nib, most usefully opposite title remnant where he notes, "This to be produced if called for by the House of Commons," and signs in full. He also signs the foot of p. i, and at "c." Cochrane Johnstone was governor of Dominica until 1803. He was brought up on a host of charges after the 1802 mutiny by the 8th West India Regiment. This trial cleared him, but his military career was over. N° de ref. de la librería 189873
