Descripción

"Thankfully, the letters of the Berman children survived the war and the pstwar years. Their letters are honest, unassuming accounts written 'at the scene' for an absent father and with little idea that hisotrians would one day be interested in their content. They represent the complexity of the experience of war for many of America's children. Better than any available source, they exemplify the many important ways that children throughout the United States actively engaged in the extraordinary events of that era. They provide new meaning to the idea that World War II was 'everybody's war'-including that of American children." {Judy Barrett Litoff}. This book has 314 pages and is illustrated. A genealogy in the rear of the book indicates that Reuben and Isabel Berman had six children. This remarkable copy has the signatures of Sam Berman, David Berman, Betsy Berman Applebaum, Ruth Berman {who compiled the book}, and Jean Berman. In addition a small child {a Berman descendent}, Meghan has signed the book. In addition the editor, Judy Barrett Litoff has signed the book. A unique ASSOCIATION copy of this book. Acerca de

Sinopsis:

David, Betsy, and Sammy Berman were nine, six, and four years old in May 1943 when the U.S. Army sent their father, Dr. Reuben Berman, to Europe. Over the next two and a half years, the children regularly gathered around their mother, Isabel Berman, in their Minneapolis home while she typed exactly what they wanted to say to their father. This collection of more than 340 letters, selected from more than a thousand exchanged by the Berman family via V-mail, captures the anxiety and loss that children experienced when their fathers left for war.

About the Author:

Ruth Berman, too young to write to Poppa during wartime, collected and transcribed her siblings' and parents' letters for publication.
