PUBLISHER : Gimli ; Winnipeg, 1893-[1896] . Publ. dates/Seq. 1.-4. Year/árg. Credits: Editor/Ritstj. Magnús J. Skaptason. We offer here COMPLETE SET OF 48 ISSUES bound in one hardcover volumes, including : Years I-IV, 12 monthly issues each year for a total of 48 issues, which vary from 12 to 16 pages each, and 21 X 15 cm in size. CONDITION: All issues Very Good or better, bound in red cloth hardcover with both hinges strting (cracked) . SUBJECTS : Western [North American] Icelanders/Vestur-Íslendingar; Icelandic literature; religion; Unitarian Church. OTHER : Wilhelm Kristjanson, in his book, The Icelandic People in Manitoba (p. 360) and in his unpublished and hand-written notes (undated) states that Dagsbrun was a "liberal religious periodical' edited by Reverend Magnús J. Skaptason, "leader of the liberal religious movement in New Iceland" , and a Unitarian minister. "Dagsbrun was sixteen pages [and] 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches in size. This was the first liberal religious paper among the Icelandic paper [sic], either in Iceland or America [read North America]. The place of publication was originally Gimli but in 1895 the Unitarian congregation in Winnipeg assumed responsibility for publication". Kristjanson states that followers of the paper were widely distributed and included subscribers from the Icelandic settlements in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia as well as in the states of North Dakota, Minnesota, Washington and Utah. In his assessment of this publishing venture, Rev. Skaptason mentioned the opposition he felt from the established [i.e., Icelandic Lutheran] church toward his periodical, but claimed that it had succeeded in causing people to think and it helped by deflecting them from the 'slavish fears of superstitious beliefs' (source: Kristjanson, handwritten notes). Skaptason also edited the North American Icelandic periodicals Heimskringla, Baldur, Frodi and Lising. CONDITION : The condition of these two hardcover volumes is overall Very Good, notwithstanding moderate wear to hardcover bindings and occasional loose pages and mild smudges within the text - this set is in remarkably nice condition for a periodical of this age.
