Descripción:

1st Edition. Extremely important American legal work of the Revolutionary War era. This volume, printed by Ann Catherine Green, "has the distinction of being the only Colonial Maryland imprint with a copper engraved title page, and was considered the best-known example of Thomas Sparrow's work" [Hudak. Early American Women Printers and Publishers 265-299]. Lawrence Wroth (The Colonial Printer) says the engraved title page "was Sparrow's best work." The first original American legal guide, it is also the first American book on the law of wills. Dedicated to the last Royal Governor of Maryland, Robert Eden, it was printed by Ann Catherine Green, wife of Jonas Green, whom she succeeded as public printer of Maryland after her husband passed in 1767. The engraved title page, the only one issued from a colonial Maryland press, and the plate were the work of Thomas Sparrow, the only engraver south of the Mason-Dixon Line prior to 1775. Vallette was registrar of the Prerogative Office of Maryland Province. An exceptionally important work, this 1774 1st Edition is bound in original sheep. Binding rubbed with mild edge wear, including a chip to the leather at lower front corner and short mild splits in outer front joints at crown and heel of spine edge. Original burgundy gilt spine label intact, though rubbed at edges. Interior occasionally browned though in excellent condition. Dedication page to Eden with a scratched-out name in 18th-century ink. Overall, a handsome, quality edition of an extremely important piece of Legal Americana. N° de ref. de la librería
