The book lacks the title page,so I am assuming that this copy is from one of the two York printings of 1738.The first appearance of any part of this work,a single poem "The Female Rake",appeared in 1735.In its present form it was printed twice in York in 1738,& again in London, with a slightly altered title,in 1739.This copy lacks A1 [i-ii],the tile page, but is otherwise complete.Where the four page subscribers' list gives place of residence, most are in Yorkshire,& the author's note at the foot of the subscriber's list reads " N.B. The subscribers names from London,Newcastle, etc. are not yet come to hand",suggesting the first,or a very early, issue. The binding is battered & worn,& lacks the top section of the spine. The contents are browned & spotted & shaken. The dedication is "To the Ladies of York",& the various contents are slanted towards a female readership, though with a slightly libertine tinge. There is a sprinkling of women among the subscribers, but most are men.A heavily worn copy of a rarity, but sadly lacking its titlepage.
