The Mitchell company was one of the first to try out the new technique of engraving on steel plates experimenting with steel almost 20 years before the rest of the publishing industry. He was printing with steel in the early 1830s; the general switch to steel was approximately 1850. During the early years of the company, Mitchell published mainly maps and travel guides. In 1860, Mitchell started producing "Mitchell's New General Atlas",and Mitchell Sr. retired and turned the business over to his son of the same name. The New General Atlas was published until 1893. Today Mitchell maps are sought after for their fine engraving, bright coloring, and attention to detail. They are some of the finest maps produced during this time period. This map produced in 1866, has Mitchell's unique floral border, and beautiful hand coloring. This map details the states of Michigan and Wisconsin. Counties, cities, towns, lakes, rivers, mountains, and transportation routes are noted. Each map was printed on thick paper with vibrant hand color. The size of the map is 11.5 x 14. 20 1/2 x 15 inches. Condición: Very good condition. Lake Michigan bisects this cartographic production. The two states, Michigan and Wisconsin bifurcate the cartographic presentation. Obviously the compiler of the map was intent on showing the common bodies of water. Lake Superior and Lake Huron are also shown The lower sections of both states show significant development. The upper sections of woodlands have limited railroad penetration. Overall this nicely presented map is not a cartographic curiosity but rather a well done transportation map. What is lacking is the tracking of major water routes within the lakes. Theis is a very decorative map. Nº de ref. del artículo: 418

20 1/4 x 13 5/8 inches. This is a superb presentation of Lake Michigan and its two main bordering states. Each county is identified by its own color in the simple three color scheme. Most important is the presentation of sophisticated railroad networks in both states. Maps of Milwaukee and Detroit are printed on the verso of each of the two pages of the map. The map is contained within straight lined neatlines. Good with a few minor tears expertly repaired using archival mending tape. Nº de ref. del artículo: 181

Condición: Fine. This beautiful map of Michigan, Wisconsin, and a portion of the Great Lakes was engraved by W.H. Gamble and published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in 1877. Mitchell was one of the most prominent American mapmakers of the 19th century and initially got involved with cartography as a school teacher who was frustrated with the quality of available maps. He collaborated with skilled engravers and produced high-quality maps and atlases that contained the most up-to-date information available. Mitchell's son (of the same name) would take over the business after his death in 1860 and continue the tremendous output. His attention to detail is evident within the image, which provides an engaging snapshot of the two Upper Midwestern states at the end of the Reconstruction Era. County configuration, settlement distribution, and railroad density show much greater development in the southern extremes of both Wisconsin and Michigan. But the allure of remote timber forests, iron and copper mines, and other valuable resources is gradually opening up the rest of the region, especially in the Upper Peninsula. Maritime transportation routes from primary ports across Lake Michigan are also noted. A fascinating variety of settlements, geographic features, and other locations of interest are labeled throughout the image, which is enclosed by a decorative ivy border. Sheet Width (in) 23 Sheet Height (in) 15.1 Condition Description Some light wear visible along the outer edges of the sheet, including a few tiny tears (confined to the margins), faint toning, and a creased upper left corner. A few light scattered spots in the image, but the map remains in very good condition. Nº de ref. del artículo: 4936
