Octavo (184 x 118 mm). Contemporary red calf prize binding, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, green morocco label, decorative roll to boards, school roundel to upper board, and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. Prize bookplate. Frontispiece and illustrations throughout, many from photographs. Spine a little tanned with some wear at the head, a few scuffs and rubbed areas to calf, contents fresh. A very good copy. Possibly second edition, originally published in 1895. A nicely bound copy of this comprehensive and well-illustrated guide to outdoor activities for late-Victorian boys. Included are chapters on identifying birds and their nests and eggs, obtaining wild birds and rearing them as pets, approaching and observing (and sometimes killing) wild animals, caring for domestic pets, fishing, foraging for nuts and berries, identifying poisonous plants, winter sports such as skating and tobogganing, swimming, toy boats and kites, and games such as knucklebones, all heavily illustrated, including many photographs of wild animals and plants. One of the most delightful chapters is that on "rambling", which encourages undirected play and exploration. "Although there are so many interesting things to do in the open air, it would be a dreadful affair were a boy to get it on his conscious that he should never go out without wishing to attain some special purpose. On the contrary, there are many days on which one is inclined to wander, simply for wandering's sake, and not infrequently these, in the end, turn out the happiest of all.In England one is never far from a brook. and few boys know one well without at times experiencing a desire to penetrate to its source. To play at being Dr. Livingstone is a quite delightful pastime. Fancy easily transforms the slender streamlet into a Nile.". N° de ref. de la librería
