Sinopsis: Covering aspects of library services for young adults, this guide includes: information about YA Internet use in libraries, with an overview of policy issues for the Internet and suggested criteria for evaluating Internet information; and a training tool kit for library staff.
From Booklist: In this new, considerably expanded edition, Jones provides what librarians need to turn YAs into "raving fans" of the public library, writing in an engaging, conversational style, laced with humor and flashes of irreverence, that shows his passion for the "swarm of beasts" that invade public libraries. Information on training and technology, useful mainly to experienced librarians, has been added here; programming has been omitted, with a short list of helpful resources provided instead. The book is organized around a month-by-month planning calendar, with each month introducing a section. However, the monthly lists might have been better grouped together as the tasks noted for the month do not always correspond to the topics in the section. Jones' interweaving of research gathered from within as well as outside the library community is one of the book's greatest strengths, and the detailed table of contents, followed by guides to particular topics, will be extremely helpful. The complicated format, including tables, sidebars, and forms as well as text, is usually so successful that flipping back and forth is seldom necessary. There are, however, a few problems: a page is missing, and some charts are misplaced or mislabeled. Corrections are slated for the next printing, though, with plans in the works to distribute the missing page along with an errata sheet. Corrections will also be posted on the book's Web site, which also includes links and updated, new, and additional information. These few glitches aside, this is a valuable resource. Susan Rosenzweig
