Folio (18 x 12 inches). (Title-page and preliminaries creased). 46 double-page engraved maps set within broad letterpress margins, 3 double-page letterpress statistical pages, and a comparative list of the rivers of the world, all with original hand-colour in full, one uncoloured plate of the mountains of the world. Contemporary half black morocco, drab paper boards, gilt (worn, endpapers creased and spotted). Provenance: with the bookplate of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society tipped-in to the front free endpaper, and with their discreet ink library stamp on each plate; with the York City Libraries bookplate on the front paste-down; purchased at Sotheby's 23rd November 1994, lot 155. Third edition, first published in 1822, all maps and text are updated, except the Michigan and Washington D.C. maps, to April 1826. "The publishers have great pleasure in acknowledging the patronage which this work has received, and now submit this third edition with the confidence that it will be found materially improved. All the changes that have taken place throughout this continent, since the publication of the former edition, are, it is believed, to be found here, as they have used every exertion to obtain the necessary information. The changes throughout our country are so rapid, that it is almost impossible to keep pace with them; and it will not, therefore, be thought extraordinary, if some errors should be found, although they hope and believe there are very few". The map of the United States shows Texas as part of Mexico, and the accompanying leaf of text states: "In April, 1826, the legislature of the union concurred in the opinion of the President upon the expediency of uniting with the other republics of America in a general congress. Commissioners were accordingly appointed to attend the general meeting at Panama". The map of Arkansa Territory is based on the discoveries of Major S.H. Long, and when first published in 1822 preceded the map published with Long's official account, also published by Carey and Lea in 1822 and 1823. The map of Mexico shows the new republic as it was in 1824: "In 1824 a new constitution was formed, and a federal republic established on the model of the United States. In July of that year, Iturbide made an ineffectual attempt to regain his crown. He landed on the coast of Mexico with a few followers, but was soon taken and immediately executed. Mexico now enjoys all the prosperity and peace which may be expected from republican institutions, under the government of judicious statesmen". Sabin 15055. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
