Rare first and only edition of José Antonió de Sá¿s overview of the customs, industry, laws, agriculture, commerce, mining, and other products of Portugal, presented as background information in this guide book for Portuguese travelers venturing to foreign lands. The text is divided into the three parts, with the first briefly treating the general theme of Portugal¿s riches in relation to other nations both past and present, with references to a number of contemporary and past authors. Mention is made of specific products such as lead, lithium, indigo, magnesium, and cinnamon from Brazil, Angola, São Tomé and Cabo Verde. Pará, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Maranhão are specifically referred to, as are plants specific to Brazil. The islands of São Miguel and Terciera in the Azores are also mentioned. The second part spells out the qualities needed to be an observant traveler abroad and provides guidelines to assist travellers in obtaining information on the agriculture, commerce, letters and arms of a foreign country, including its animal, vegetable and natural resources. Part three deals with the preparation and sending of natural specimens back to the National Museum. It contains instructions pertaining to the various divisions of the animal kingdom, including quadrupeds of various sizes, birds, eggs, nests, amphibians, reptiles (with a separate section on snakes), fish, insects, mollusks, conches, starfish, coral, crustaceans, as well as plants and minerals. There follows supplementary advice regarding which instruments to take, tips on the political climate, making conversation, keeping a diary, etc. A final section of additions concentrates on the author¿s native Tras-os-Montes, devoting considerable attention to the silk factory near Bragança and its products. Motezinho, Lugar de França, and the Villa de Chacim are also discussed. The work includes two large folding tables (Diario politico and Diario filosofico) to be completed by the future traveler. The author served as Juiz de fora at the Villa de Moncorva, and Desembargador de Relação do Porto. Later he served in various high administrative posts in Lisbon, where he died in 1819. He was one of the earliest members of the Academia Real das Sciencias de Lisboa. * Innocêncio IV, p. 246 (not mentioning the folding tables) and p. 464, and XII, p. 236. N° de ref. de la librería
