Top and bottom of spine bumped - about 5mm of cloth missing at each. Joint between back cover and spine is splitting. FFEP is annotated. Front inner hinge cracking - repaired with tape. Water damage has caused red ink stains to pages. Water stains to half-title page and reverse of frontispiece. Half-title page has previous owner's inscription. Rear hinge cracked but holding. Occasional light foxing, particularly to illustrations. Contains several colour plates. Binding loose. When securely packed this item will weigh in the region of 345g. With coloured illustrations, from designs by Sowerby. John George Wood, or Rev J. G. Wood, (21 July 1827 3 March 1889), was an English writer who popularised natural history with his writings. Condition: In a blue cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine and gilt embellishment to the front board. Externally, a trifle rubbed. There is some minor bumping to the top and tail of the spine. Internally, binding is loosening in places. Rear hinge has failed, front hinge is weak. Pages are generally bright and clean.
