Personality, or personal style, plays a role in all facets of organizational life, and coaching is no exception. Understanding how personal style affects behavior is an important first step in developing the rapport that leads to successful coaching relationships. What's My Coaching Style teaches trainers how personality affects behavior, and equips them with the insight to improve relationships and ultimately become more effective coaches.

How It Works

Participants respond to 18 pairs of statements according to how much they believe each statement reflects their own behavior. Scoring of the assessment reveals a Coaching Style Profile and a dominant preference for one or more personal styles: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, and Systematic. Easy-to-read charts allow respondents to quickly scan the strengths and trouble spots that characterize their particular coaching styles.

The Deluxe Facilitator Set lists optional activities that enable participants to practice using flexibility when working with other styles. In addition, each Participant Guide provides a personal action-planning worksheet so individuals can apply what they've learned to the workplace. To determine compatibility of styles in the coaching relationship, a Feedback Form allows individuals to gauge how they are perceived by those they coach. This is particularly useful in the early stages of a coaching relationship.

What's My Coaching Style is based on the well-known research and personality theories of psychologists Carl Jung, William Moulton Marston, and others. Most research has identified two basic dimensions of style, which we refer to as assertiveness and expressiveness. Assertiveness is the effort a person makes to influence or control the thoughts or actions of others. Expressiveness is the effort that a person makes to control his or her emotions and feelings when relating to others.

Combining the two dimensions results in a four-quadrant model with four unique personal styles: Direct, Spirited, Considerate, or Systematic. This is the basis for the HRDQ Style Model and the assessments and training in the HRDQ Style Series.
