Criminal psychologist and behavioral scientist often find themselves debating on the effects of nature versus nurture when dealing with people who cause harm to others. The argument stems from the possible theories of a person’s physiology and biology affects or is affected by the environment in which they are raised. For serial killer and rapist Bobby Joe Long, both nature and nurture shaped who he became later in life. Long was born with medical issues that would plague him later in life. His medical situations would increase as he experienced one after another after another accidents and incidents leaving him with damage to his head and physical facial deformities. These physiological issues would then be compounded by a broken household with an unconventional parenting, a life riddled with early exposure to sexuality, drugs and alcohol, and abuse. As Long passed through the years, his reactions to the world around him and his treatment of people would escalate until he would spend almost two years raping, beating, and murdering a string of women before the law finally stepped in and put him behind bars.
