First Edition. vii, 184 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket (price-clipped). '[B]y identifying the scope of political economy so emphatically with 'the art of directing the national industry to the purposes to which it may be directed with greatest advantage,' Bentham tended to associate its instruction chiefly with the legislative goal of abundance; that is, with but one of the lesser three of the four subsidiary ends of law. The consequence was a remarkably narrow art, comprising a remarkably meager set of governing principles. As Donald Winch observed of the related setting in which Bentham appropriated Smith in making his case against colonies, 'The discussion is more dogmatic, and many of the subtle distinctions which were so much a feature of Smith's analysis have disappeared' ' (David Lieberman, 'Economy and Polity in Bentham's Science of Legislation', Boalt Working Papers in Public Law, Year 2002, Paper 97). 'Adam Smith's attitudes to the colonies and the options open to the British Government are summarized in Donald Winch, Classical Political Economy and Colonies (London, 1965), 14–24' (Endnote 4 to Appendix B, 'Smith's Thoughts on the State of the Contest with America, February 1778', edited by David Stevens, in The Glasgow Edition of the Works and Correspondence of Adam Smith, Volume VI: The Correspondence of Adam Smith). Chapter 2: 'Adam Smith and Empire'. N° de ref. de la librería 15891
