Black-and-white reference photograph from the US release of the 1972 documentary film, struck circa 1979. Here Sedgwick shows a whimsical and characteristically sad smile while smoking a cigarette, with a blurred Allen Ginsberg in the foreground.A semi-autobiographical cinema verite documentary, scripted but with most of the actors playing themselves, made during the final five years of Sedgwick's life. The original Warhol superstar died in 1971, and importantly the documentary was shot just before (and edited just after) her death--in one sense exploitative, but in another sense fortunate in that the essence of her cultural effect, as well as her slow deterioration, was keenly retained. The documentary began shooting, reportedly in a drug and alcohol fueled haze both behind and in front of the camera, during Sedgwick's peak Factory years in 1967. She became increasingly unstable, and often completely absent, and shooting was soon suspended. Several years in and out of hospitals and institutions followed, and in 1970, residing on a ranch in Arcadia, California, with live-in care provided by John Palmer and his wife, Sedgwick became determined to finish the project, shooting more footage in a much reduced state, and recording hours of audio footage that would become the film's narrative voiceover. Filming wrapped in early 1971, and Sedgwick died in November of the same year from an overdose. The film was released in 1972 to much acclaim, only to disappear for nearly a decade. Interest in having it restored came with the publication of the Sedgwick biography by George Plimpton and Jean Stein published in 1982, and in 2002, 30 years after its original premiere, the new version screen at New York's Cinema Village. In October 2002, Plexifilm released a special edition DVD with additional 35mm outtake footage, rare pictures and interviews with the cast and crew of the film8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm).
