The Children's Picture Gallery, 300 Illustrations [title page actually incorrect, book containing 357 hand colored illustrations] Issued Philadelphia, c. 1850's by Davis, Porter, & Co. pp. 96, 357 different small wood engravings, all individually hand-colored as issued. Rare American hand-colored juvenile. To be considered among those books containing the largest number of hand-colored juvenile woodcut illustrations issued during the 19th century. Few woodcut books can rival it, and few are as little known as this one. Period cloth spine binding, laminated pictorial yellow paper covered boards, Publishers printed list on rear cover, profusely illustrated. In entirely acceptable antiquarian condition. Fragile binding now lightly age rubbed and worn with some small chipping along the edges, but overall the book is still quite attractive. Text block loosened from 100+ years of browsing & handling, signatures gently shaken thus, sewn gatherings loosened, some light scattered foxing throughout, small minor markings, etc. Overall, the pages remain clean, the book is worn but sound. An appealing and rare hand-colored mid-19th century juvenile book, a compendium of charming almost folk-art woodcut images in many subject areas, including Christmas, opera, children playing games and together outside, rinding horses, lit candles, China, nationalities, ships, acrobats, various animals, fables, dancing, architectural wonders, hot-air balloons, drinking beer, India, American Indians, etc. Of further historical interest is that someone long ago went through the book and carefully numbered in pencil below each image. The hand writing is almost assuredly old, possibly 19th century. In more than 30 years of looking, we can recall very few 19th century juvenile books where an early owner has hand-numbered a tally of the illustrations, in part because there were simply so many. It's also very unusual for an picture book to under-count it's own number of original illustrations on the title page- most publishers tended to overstate or exaggerate their illustrations. Frankly, we cannot recall such a book title page aside from now this one. Of further interest, it also says 300 on the cover! A picture is worth a thousand words. Please examine pictures closely, as what you see is what we will send you. [note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.]. Overall sound and despite any flaws, still a nice old book well worthy of ownership for any collection and/ or display. We've done our best to photograph the book so you can see the condition and we've tried to mention any flaws or issues. Measures c. 9 7/8" H. x 8" W. [A6178]. N° de ref. de la librería
