A fully-illustrated look at the work of Charles de Wolf Brownell, contemporary of Frederic Church, John F. Kensett, and other Hudson River School painters. Color reproductions accompanied by informative essay about Brownell's background, experiences and work during the years 1856-66. Some focus placed on the work he did in Cuba.

About the Author:

Zachary D. Ross has been a Researcher at Hirschl & Adler since 1998. He received his B.S. in Physics from the University of California at Davis in 1993, and he is presently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Art History at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, with a concentration in American art. He has authored two other catalogues at Hirschl & Adler: Spirit of the Past: The Paintings of Edmund Quincy (2000), and Ruth Light Braun: New York and Palestine, 1926-1933 (2002). Ross also wrote “Rest for the Weary: American Nervousness and the Aesthetics of Repose,” in Women on the Verge: The Culture of Neurasthenia in Nineteenth-Century America, exh. cat. (Stanford, California: The Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for the Visual Arts, 2004).
