This is the first edition of renowned writer Joseph Conrad's classic work of fiction (see below). It has the following three issues of the first state of the first edition (true first edition): 1) Sage-green cloth binding. 2) "Methven" (instead of "Methuen") on the spine. 3) 32-page catalog of books published by Methuen at end, dated 1913. However, the verso of the title page is dated 1914 (instead of 1913), indicating second state of the first edition. (Source: Ahearn: Collected Books (Putnam: NY. 2002), p. 146) As "The Bookman" (Dodd, Mead & Co. 1921) points out, "[c]uriously, however, there are copies which have these details and yet have the title- page date of 1914. This indicates that some copies had been printed and bound before the delay in publication had been decided upon, as the title- page is a substituted one, the original plainly having been cut out and a new one pasted on the edge left. This leads not only to a new "first edition", but to first and second issues of that edition." 8vo. 406pp. Followed by 32-page catalog (see above). Green cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Printed on very clean and thick high quality paper. Very minor age wear to binding. Minor foxing to half-title, title page and table of contents. Foxing to page edges, not affecting text. Overall, clean and tight. A remarkable copy of this extraordinary work of fiction, in great shape. Classic work by Polish novelist Joseph Conrad (see below). "Chances" was his greatest commercial success upon initial publication. Joseph Conrads (1857 ¿ 1924), who is regarded by many critics as one of the greatest novelists in the English language ¿ a fact that is remarkable as he did not learn to speak English fluently until he was in his twenties. Conrad is also recognized as a master prose stylist and a forerunner of modernist literature. (Source: Public Domain). N° de ref. de la librería 103811
