First Edition. 2 leaves, 487 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine. Polska Akademia Nauk Monografie Matematyczne, Tom 34. 'Sierpinski's most important work . . . was in set theory, and in 1908 he was the first to teach a systematic course on that subject. He investigated set theory and related domains . . . for fifty years. . . . The most important of his books and monographs on set theory are Hypothèse du continu (1934) and Cardinal and Ordinal Numbers (1958)' (D. S. B. XII: 426). In the preface to Cardnial and Ordinal Numbers, Sierpinski writes that he completed the Polish manuscript in 1952, then proceeded to translate it into English. He notes that in 1909, a lithographic edition of his pioneering lectures on the theory of sets was published, and in 1912, the first edition of his lectures on the theory of sets at the University of Lwów appeared (followed by a second edition in 1923 and a two-volume third edition in 1928). He says the lectures he then gave routinely at the University of Warsaw from 1920-39 were devoted to the theory of sets, but more specfically the topics of cardinal and ordinal numbers that he then set out in this book. Twenty four years earlier, Hypothèse du continu was published as Monografje Matematyczne, Tom. IV. N° de ref. del artículo 15521
