[19.5 x 15 cm], pp 310. Although Fr. Ralliere is not even mentioned in the book, he was the parish priest of Tome, New Mexico, from 1857-1913. He traveled extensively throughout New Mexico collecting religious songs, including the hymns or "alabados" of the Penitentes -- none of this could have been easy in his day: he is apparently even the subject of some local ballads. (See Encyc. of Latino Popular Culture, vol. 1; p 252). Along with Charles Lummis, Fr. Ralliere was the pioneer musical ethnographer of the Hispanic population of this area. Many of the hymns that Fr. Ralliere collected were later recorded from an old-time resident of Tome and are housed at the Univ. of New Mexico library. Of these hymns, Fr. "these are songs with music from the Northern New Mexico region in which he spent so many years as a parish priest (the village of Tome). "Probably the most important nineteenth century Spanish language hymnbook of the Southwest." (Koegel: "Village Musical Life Along the Rio Grande") Originally published in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1916 at the same press which was then located in Las Vegas, and operated by exiled Jesuit priests. In fact that only indication of authorship in any of the editions are the initials "AMDG" (ad majorem gloriam dei), which is the Jesuit motto. This edition with the music was anteceded, perhaps about 1910, by a volume which only contained the lyrics. The hymns are numbered and generally follow those of the earlier editions which contained only the lyrics, though not entirely. Changes were made -- additions, rearrangement of the material -- so the correspondence is not strict. OCLC list 8 copies of this edition and 7 of a previous edition -- it is not a common book in the trade. The title page has been professionally repaired and looks very good; in all other respects the text and binding are in excellent condition. Very good copy. N° de ref. de la librería
