ERLE STANLEY GARDNER'S COPY, inscribed to him on the front free endpaper: "To Erle Stanley Gardner / My favorite rustler / Hi Ho Howe / Garden City N.Y. 8/25/49." Though born in Massachusetts, Gardner is best known for his life in and travels throughout California. His Perry Mason series are set throughout California and Mexico, making a book on the pictorial history of the state a particularly personal association. Previous owner's bookplate on inner cover. Very slight soiling to lower front corner, else a fine copy. Another of this author's excellent titles, packed with illustrations and reference to California art. A desirable reference which brings to light previously unpublished or little-known historical drawings and paintings. The first section provides illustrations by artist-explorers under Spanish rule. Paintings and drawings are then presented from the Mexican period; drawings and paintings by soldiers and sailors during the Conquest, etc. A major portion of the book deals with painting and drawings during the Gold Rush period in 1848 and the subsequent settlement during the next ten years.
