Author Grant MacEwan was a well-known Canadian writer; his contributions in the fields of agriculture, Western history, and conservation of resources had wide publication in magazines and books. A native son and ardent westerner, he was born in Brandon in 1902. The family background was in farming, first in Manitoba, and later at Melfort, Saskatchewan. He earned degrees in Agriculture and Science in Ontario and in the state of Iowa, before joining the staff of the University of Saskatchewan; later being appointed Dean of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba. When he later moved to Calgary, Alberta, he devoted himself mainly to public service and to writing . He was elected a City of Calgary alderman in 1953 and a member of the Alberta Legislature in 1955. The 59 chapters in this fascinating book of the history of the City of Calgary, in the Canadian province of Alberta, include subjects such as: Where the Elbow Joins the Bow River, The MacLeod Trail, Bull Trains on 9th Avenue, The Sarcees in a Murderous Mood, Silver and Gold, Trails and Rails to the North, Chinooks and the Winter Without them, Cappy Smart's Fire Brigade, Hunters , Hacksand Haltershanks, Battle Scarred Kanouse, The Dark Days of 1885, The Stampede of 1912, The Baker Company, Oil and War, Calgary Claimed a Prince, and much much more of the fascinating true stories of this great 'little city' that grew from an outpost fort and retains an authentic western town roots.
