The bird's eye view with the profile below and the city views and arms as the other borders can be assembled as a very large wall map depicting Rotterdam at the summit of the Golden Age. The tremendous prosperity of a Dutch port at the close of the seventeenth century is very evident, with the growth of the buildings, establishment of avenues, a wide range of commercial activity, ships in full sail, etc. Taken altogether it is one of the most graphic displays of the success of modern banking and trade ever made. The map was accomplished in 1694 and copies were retained by the municipality for presentation to important visitors. The present atlas was assembled circa 1787 with the coats-of-arms expanded and revised to that date and the engravings mounted on laid paper.
