No indication. pp(2)/(14)33(1)/(2) including single blank preliminary & final leaves; with tipped-in colour frontispiece portrait, a further 32 tipped-in colour plates, 28 monochrome plates, two in-text illustrations, and facsimile of letter to Charles Darwin. All edges gilt. Blank preliminary leaf faintly & sparsely spotted, blank final leaf faintly & patchily toned. Upper parts of inner edges from recto of half-title leaf to verso of title-page leaf patchily toned to widths up to 13mm; most conspicuous at frontispiece and title-page, but well away from frontispiece plate and print on title-page. Full black morocco binding of the period and custom-made box. Spine with gilt double-rules. Boards with gilt & blindstamped ruled borders and inner gilt dentelles; front board with gilt title, and gilt initials H.M.F. at lower left within borders. White moiré endpapers, black fabric strips along endpaper hinges (a feature of the binding, not later reinforcements of hinges). Front board with very minor abrasions at fore- & lower edges close to lower outer corner. Minor insect damage confined to fabric strip at front endpapers, in form of some loss at head and slight loss at foot. Front flyleaf with narrow broken smudge-trail of length about 25mm. (No dust jacket.) Blue-black cloth-covered box 275x235mm nearly 30mm deep, with metal clasp; lined on the inside with white moiré paper as at book endpapers. Outsides of box unevenly faded, rubbed at edges and corners, and with splits and slight fraying of cloth covering along one edge.
