315pp. . The absorbing life story of one who had many experiences (often painful) as a Black intellectual, professional and community leader but who kept his dignity and an iron-willed determination to not be defeated by a social environment hostile to his identity and his mission in life. Stevens was born in Boston and later went to New York where he interacted with many leading Blacks. His first connection with Harvard was as the steward of the Signet Club. His great intellectual potential was "discovered" there, impressing prominent professors and others who passed through its doors. His Signet contacts led to his being somehow enrolled in the College (through a mysterious "back door" process) and he went on to an active professional and business career. There is much valuable information about Boston's early 20th century Black community, the experiences of Blacks at Harvard then and Harlem social life. A great many details about prejudice in Boston and its local Black elite are given (names, families, events, neighborhoods, etc.). Though angry about the racial obstacles he had to endure, he did not succumb to defeat, escapism, self-destruction or crippling, self-absorbed bitterness. Interestingly, the book is dedicated to the hell-raising Black journalist and activist William Monroe Trotter (Harvard '1895, Magna Cum Laude), described on the dedication page as a friend and "a great Race Champion". Scarce and worthwhile book for those interested in Harvard, Boston and New York Black history. VG. N° de ref. de la librería 000217
