[POETRY: BALTIMORE IMPRINT: 1888]. MORISON, Nathaniel Holmes. THE CAPTIVE AND OTHER EARLY RHYMES. Octavo, cream-colored parchment wrappers printed in gold, 113 pages. Recipient's name, in author's ink holograph, on publisher's printed dedication leaf: "To 'Mrs. Susan Livingston' with the kind regards of the author" [with recipient's name only in author's ink holograph-- rest of dedication is printed]. Uncommon [OCLC locates only 9 holdings: Holy Cross, Harvard (2 holdings), Library of Congress, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, NYPL, Brown and Virginia]. Nathaniel Morison Holmes (1815-1890) was born in Peterboro, New Hampshire. He graduated from Harvard College in 1839, and went on to teach at, and later run, his own school for young ladies. In addition to publishing poetry, he also wrote two primary school textbooks. Few tiny soil spots on front cover, else a very good, bright copy, with the text fresh and clean.
